WHERE WE LEARN, CREATE, AND GROW

OUR STUDIO

Located in small town Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan

Our sewing studio is located in the bright, welcoming basement of our home. The space is designed specifically for learning and creating, with everything students need to feel comfortable and successful. Students have access to four individual sewing stations, each equipped with a sewing machine, sewing tools, and thread. This means families only need to provide project materials for regular classes. For sewing camps, all project materials are included.

IS YOUR CHILD READY TO SEW?

Sewing is an exciting skill that builds creativity, confidence, patience, and problem-solving abilities. While many children are eager to learn, success in a sewing class depends on more than just age. We've put together a short questionnaire to help families determine whether their child is ready for the responsibility and independence that sewing requires.

How Classes Work

We offer weekly classes during the school year and sewing camps in the summer.

Our engaging hands on projects allow students to build confidence, grow in creativity and learn a lifelong skill while connecting in a screen free environment.  They are going to walk away having learned more than they or you expect. It all starts with each student signing up for one of our weekly classes.  These are kept small with about 4 students per class allowing for each student to get one on one attention, support and just a better overall learning experience.  In our classes we also use a wonderful curriculum called Kids Can Sew© (more info below) so the only thing required of the parent or student through the year is to purchase and bring the material needed to make each project.  No worries if you have never stepped foot in a fabric store before as the instructor is  available to help make each step as easy as possible.

The Sewing Camps run a little differently.  Instead of running weekly through the year they are condensed into a few days.  In those few days the students will make 1-3 beginner sewing projects. These projects will be made to build confidence, sewing skills and of course their creativity.  All the student needs for our sewing camps is to show up as all the materials and tools are provided.  At the end of the camp the students will leave with their completed projects.

THE GUIDES AND PATTERNS

Kids Can Sew©

Each student will be required to use the Kids Can Sew© guides and patterns.  We chose to use KCS because they were designed by a women with 40+ years of experience.  That means, we know these sewing lessons were designed to help kids and teens grow in confidence, creativity, and practical skills one project at a time.  That is exactly what we want to see.  The instructor will help each student work through the step by step process in the guides and help them to read/understand the paper patterns and use the sewing machines safely to complete each project.

The students are not rushed or pressured to get things done so everyone is working at their own pace.  This also allows for students to start and join our classes at any time providing there is room available in one of our classes.

WHY SEWING?

BECAUSE IT ISN'T JUST A DOMESTIC SKILL!

  • It is a doorway into developing creativity, building confidence, and an outlet to self expression.

  • It is the art of turning what was only in your imagination into something you can wear, use daily, decorate with, and give as a gifts with intention.

  • It is a powerful life skill that takes us away from screens and secretly reinforces math, reading comprehension, problem solving, focus, coordination, patience, and resilience through the process of learning to follow patterns, solve problems and create with their hands something they can be proud of from start to finish.

  • It teaches us to repair, reuse, and reimagine the things we already have or find secondhand into something beautiful again instead of throwing it into the landfill.

  • It helps students achieve a better understanding of STEM/STEAM learning & thinking while working through their different projects.
